Yesterday afternoon New Yorkers participated in a Rally Against Hate, organized by members of New York’s LGBT community. The rally was organized in response to a recent number of hate crimes, most notably the murder of Mark Carson, a gay man who was shot in the West Village neighborhood on May 18.

Argentina JUST PASSED a groundbreaking gender identity bill!!!

From now on, people will be able to change the name and gender on their ID without needing psychiatric permission or any body modifications. Furthermore, anyone who does want hormones or surgery will be able to access them for free through the public and private health system.

It was passed unanimously today by the Senate

The Ali Forney Center is the largest nationwide organization dedicated to LGBTQ homeless youth.

There are currently 39 items on their Amazon wish list, most being undergarments like tank tops, plain tees, undies and chest binders for the youth they shelter. A majority of the items are less than $20 and the most expensive item is only $35.

Let’s try to help them by Tumblr bombing the shit out the Ali Forney Center with direct donations and purchasing everything on their wish list!

40% of homeless youth in America are LGBTQ, so if you support the queer struggle, reblog this, purchase something from their wish list and get involved!

A few generous people purchased the black and white chest binders (2 of each color) and the ’go girl’ urination device. The binders were the most expensive item on the wish list, everything else is $25 or under and there is currently 36 items left. Lets do this Tumblr!

Trans woman in Hong Kong wins the right to marry:

The highest court in Hong Kong ruled that a trans woman has the right to marry her boyfriend, officially legalizing marriages between transgender people and their different-sex partners.

Same-sex marriage is not yet legal in Hong Kong or in China, and even the issue of transgender people being legally married has been hotly contested. This ruling will hopefully change that.

The surprise decision only covers the right of a transgender person who was born male to marry a man, and for one who was born female to marry a woman.

The ruling by the Court of Final Appeal brings the semiautonomous Chinese city in line with many other places in the Asia-Pacific region, including mainland China, where transgender people are allowed to marry as their new gender.

The decision will take effect in a year to give the city time to update marriage laws. Excellent, excellent news, even if we’ve still got a long way to go.

If you’re in NYC on May 13, come celebrate Sarah Schulman’s novel Empathy, our April book club pick, with the author and Barbara Browning, who’s also the author of two Emily Books picks. We’re also thrilled to be cohosting the event with literary event crowdfunding resource Togather, which is buying everyone’s first drink (Thanks, Togather!)

By posing a big, unanswerable question we hope to spark a conversation that will leave everyone with more questions. We’re also excited to host a conversation between two novelists who, in very different ways, dazzle and tantalize readers and provoke lingering thoughts about identity.
